Silly Rabbit, Dharma lives here…

Not because I wanted to, certainly, but rather because my damn dog Dharma didn’t finish the job. Every spring some dim-bulb of a rabbit would lay its little bunny eggs in our yard. When they hatched, and the chocolate melted away, they would decide that they should get out of the warren for a little air. That’s when they realized that Jack Russel terriers (Jerk Russel Terrors) live here. Any little bunny rabbits who made it back to the den were subsequently dug up and eviscerated.
Now, finishing the job Dharma started was not a pleasant thing, and when we made it through spring without an incident, I assumed that the MomumentallyStupid genes had finally been removed from the local bunny gene pool. The jury is still out on that one…
Early last week I let the dogs out into the yard, just like any other day, and they immediately rocketed around the corner of the house. I dashed to the bedroom to look at out the window and see what was up. Unfortunately, both dogs were behind the compost bin. As I head out to the yard, I figure they are just chasing after a squirrel up in a tree or something, but as I come around the corner of the house and call Dharma, I see what’s up. She turns to face me with a glossy, well fed, full grown rabbit held secure, if limp, in her mouth.
I wasn’t mad at her this time for the following reasons:
- Dharma is getting to be an old dog
- She finished the job
- This was not a bunch of little babies, but a full grown rabbit
- Dharma is a hunter
- She was so very pleased with herself
I was more than a little proud. Good dog.
